Shane Sheffield, M.S.Ed.

Shane is a Licensed Resident in Counseling in Virginia. He has a passion for helping individuals recognize, create, and implement valuable changes in their lives to overcome challenges and reach positive outcomes.

Clinical Focus Areas 

Shane focuses on providing in-person counseling at Free Spirit for individuals 14 and older.  He helps clients explore and receive support for life transitions, career choices, young adult life, stress management, self-esteem building, and military life, along with recovery from substance abuse, addiction, anxiety, and depression.

Counseling Approach

Shane works from a Person-Centered foundation, integrating Cognitive Behavioral, Solution-Focused, and Motivational Enhancement Therapies to help individuals discover and establish their most fulfilling and productive selves.

Educational Background

Shane earned a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a B.S. in Human Services, focusing on Addiction prevention and treatment, from Old Dominion University. He is currently a Resident in Counseling under the direct supervision of Dr. Jill Nardin, Ph.D., LPC.

Professional Experience

Shane’s experience includes various helping services that prepared him to help individuals work through challenging or troubling times through therapy. His passion for helping others encouraged him to escape his comfort zone, change careers, and do something he truly valued. Over the last five years, he has provided mental health services from multiple settings, including outpatient, inpatient, acute psychiatric, and dual-diagnosis addiction treatment.

**SPECIAL NOTE Resident Sessions: As a Licensed Resident in Counseling, Shane is in-network with Cigna/Evernorth commercial insurance and 3 Medicaid Plans: Anthem Healthkeepers+, Optima Family/Community Care, and Virginia Premier. He is also able to see other non-Medicaid clients for a sliding scale, negotiable fee.
